Why are ERC20 fees so high?
ERC20 fees are high primarily because of Ethereum's limited throughput. The network processes approximately 15 to 30 transactions per second, but demand often exceeds this capacity. When more users want to transact than the network can handle, they compete by offering higher gas prices, driving fees up.

Do I need ETH to send ERC20 tokens?
Yes, in most cases. Even if you are sending a non-ETH token like USDT or LINK, you still need ETH in your wallet to pay the gas fee. Gas fees are always denominated in ETH on the Ethereum mainnet. Emerging Paymaster solutions (EIP-4337) are beginning to allow gas payment in ERC20 tokens, but this is not yet universally available.

Why did my ERC20 transaction fail and still cost gas?
When an Ethereum transaction fails — due to insufficient gas, contract errors, or slippage issues — the gas already consumed is still charged. Validators do the computational work regardless of whether the transaction succeeds. This is why setting an appropriate gas limit before sending is important.

What is the average ERC20 transfer fee in 2025?
As of 2025, simple ERC20 token transfers cost anywhere from $0.01 to $5.00 depending on network congestion. With Ethereum's gas limit increase to 36 million units per block in early 2025, overall capacity has improved, keeping average fees relatively low during normal conditions.

Can I cancel a stuck ERC20 transaction?
Yes. If your transaction is pending because the gas price was too low, most wallets allow you to speed up or cancel it by submitting a new transaction with the same nonce but a higher gas price. Note that cancellation itself consumes gas.

Is ERC20 the cheapest network for USDT?
No. TRC20 (Tron) and Ethereum Layer 2 networks like Arbitrum typically offer much lower fees for stablecoin transfers. ERC20 on Ethereum mainnet is the most secure and widely supported option, but not the cheapest. For everyday transfers, Layer 2 or TRC20 are more cost-efficient choices.
